Lawrence (Larry)'s Story
Life
I suppose I should tell you a bit more about what has been happening in my life. Things really started to get exciting back in 1998 when I was sent to BBC World Service to act as a Broadcast Communications consultant along side our partner at the time (IBM). I was working with a company called Jutel which designed complex broadcast management solutions for multi-channel broadcast environments. It was really a dream come true, and I could not have imagined ever having an opportunity like that.
In 2000, I was sent to work in Cairo Egypt, to the Egyptian Radio and Telecommunications Union (ERTU). It is the BBC of The Middle East providing hundreds and radio, television and satellite channels throughout the region. With the exceptions of the smell, and the water, I really had a good time there, although as an American, I needed to be mindful of my surroundings. Americans are often considered targets of opportunity in the Middle East, and even more so today with our unelected President ruining more political relationships than ever before.
In 2001 I accepted a position in Switzerland at a company called Studer Professional Audio. This was another dream come true for any musician or recording fanatic. Studer was responsible for much of the recording technology used by The Beatles for Abbey Road, not to mention other artists like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, James Brown, just to name a few. Unfortunately, the economy caught up with me and that project ended.
I don't have any regrets. Everything has a reason, and Switzerland was no different! The things I experienced, and the places I visited were simply amazing. I had a very good contract at Studer which would continue to pay me for an additional 6 months after my departure. I negotiated with my wife, the idea that I would take time to come home to Finland by purchasing a motorbike and having a closer look around Europe while making my way home. S...Expand for more
he actually agreed.
I spent nearly three months on the road, from Italy to Norway, Netherlands to the Czech republic. Poland, Estonia, France. It was absolutely a blast! The one commonality between Europeans seems to be their ability to consume large amounts of hard alcohol. My trip probably did no good to my liver, but the experiences were incredible. I would not change anything, and I have no regrets. I'm actually waiting for my Son to become old enough that we will cross the United States together on motorbikes. This is the best way to find ones own identity and to understand other cultures.
After Switzerland, I worked for a German firm called VCS. This was what I could call a 2.5 year mistake, but I wont. Germany is dying, like the United States and many other countries, it finds it difficult to adapt to the changing world. Its sad really. Germans are stuck in procedures and methods which are outdated and inefficient. They remind me of Vogons in the book Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I wont bore you with nerd history. For a person who is a free and dynamic as i am, Germany was a place which limited the very essence of individualism and embraced common-ism (new word). Unfortunately, economically, I needed to stay there until I could find an equally equitable workplace in Finland. However, I knew the party was over and it was time to come home.
Back in Finland, it took some months of getting used to being home again, but, I found myself in another dream job. Today, I work for a spectral Imaging firm which supplies instruments for research/science and military applications. As boring as it sounds, I am a Product Manager.
Finally guys, don't get so down on me about my English skills. I rarely get to speak my own language, and quite often, I just mix them all into one big language basket.
I know I ramble on so I will end this now.
